Description

In this class, we will go over the basics of ballet, jazz, musical theater, and lyrical dance. Familiarizing yourselves with the fundamentals of each style, getting to know the vocabulary and technique that go with each different step. You will learn short pieces choreographed for you to work on choreography recall. Then, the choreographing begins! Students will be split into small groups, and given a song to choreograph too. Students will have the chance to choreograph according to each style of dance listed above. Students will also have the chance throughout the session to choreograph short solo pieces as well. Students will collaborate with Miss Jordan to select which pieces the class will include in showcase.

Being able to learn and retain choreography, but creating it yourself is a whole new challenge! Come explore a new dance skill!

*Class students who are cast in 'Goosebumps the Musical' or 'Sound of Music' are expected to attend their CYT class weekly.  More than one class absence may affect the student's casting/participation in the show; a scene, a dance, a role, or the show.

Teacher:

Jordan Higby

Jordan Higby is 26 years old and has been a teaching artist at CYT Tri-Valley since 2016. Jordan’s passion for the arts began at age 6 when she began dancing ballet at Livermore School of Dance. Now, almost 20 years later, ballet remains an integral part of who she is, so much so that she is now a ballet teacher on staff at Livermore School of Dance herself! She also enjoys dancing and teaching lyrical, jazz, musical theater, and tap dance! Aside from dance, Jordan is passionate about creative writing. Her love for creative writing began at age 15 during her high school creative writing class. She firmly believes that we all have stories to tell, and we all possess the ability to tell those stories! Jordan graduated from California Baptist University (CBU) in 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. She also holds a Master of Arts in Strategic Communication from CBU as of 2024. Her end goal is working in Social Services in the division of Child Welfare. No matter where her professional life takes her, she hopes to always have the time to teach and guide the next generation of performers!
