Description

Come learn how to play handbells; the ultimate instrument for encouraging teamwork and listening skills!

Unique among instruments, handbells require collaboration in order to be played. Each bell ringer will be assigned only one or two bells, which means players must work together to have enough notes to create each song.

Through music games and practice, students will learn bell etiquette and playing techniques including basic ringing and damping skills along with more advanced techniques like swings, vibrato, and bell circles. Along with bell playing skills, we will learn the basics of reading music and recognizing music notation unique to handbells. During the class, we will build from simple scales and chords to mastery of beginner bell choir songs for performance at the showcase.

*Ability to read music is helpful but not required*

I am a fan of CYT and have enjoyed watching my niblings perform in showcases and shows over the years. I am excited to move from spectator to teacher for the first time this spring! I have previously worked with children and young adults in various educational settings and am excited to share my love of music and the arts with the next generation of performers. Though I've dabbled in various instruments and vocal groups over the years I keep returning to English Handbells, an instrument I began playing in 4th grade and I love for the interconnectedness and cooperation it requires. I currently perform with, and co-direct, the St. Philips Handbell Choir in Dublin.
